ESIC Challan Payment and Monthly Contribution Filing

Employers report employee-wise wages and contribution, generate the monthly challan, pay both shares and retain the confirmed contribution history.

How to generate and pay an ESIC challan

  1. 1Complete payroll and identify every covered employee for the wage month.
  2. 2Verify insurance numbers, joining dates, days worked and ESI wages.
  3. 3Enter or upload employee-wise contribution details on the ESIC employer portal.
  4. 4Review the contribution summary and generate the challan.
  5. 5Pay through the available authorised online payment method.
  6. 6Confirm the transaction and download the paid challan and contribution history.

Due date and payment responsibility

The employer must deposit the employee and employer shares within 15 days after the end of the calendar month in which the contribution falls due. The employer remains responsible for payment, including contributions relating to covered workers engaged through contractors.

Do not treat a bank debit alone as proof of successful compliance. Confirm that the transaction is reflected against the correct contribution period and retain the portal receipt.

Checks before final submission

  • Reconcile ESI wages to payroll and overtime records.
  • Check employees who crossed the wage limit during the contribution period.
  • Verify zero-wage, joining and exit cases.
  • Collect contractor contribution evidence.
  • Match the paid amount to the ledger and portal contribution history.
