ESIC Consultancy for Kolkata employers
The Employees' State Insurance Act, 1948 gives covered workers medical care, sickness and maternity benefit, disablement compensation and dependants' benefit — funded by a small monthly contribution from employer and employee. In West Bengal the scheme applies to factories and notified establishments employing ten or more persons, and covers every employee drawing wages up to the prescribed ceiling of Rs. 21,000 per month (Rs. 25,000 for employees with disability). SafePoint's ESIC consultancy handles the registration, the monthly contribution cycle and everything that follows, so your workers get their entitlements and your establishment stays clear of recovery proceedings.
Coverage is often misread. The ten-employee test counts all persons employed for wages in connection with the work of the establishment — including contract workers, casual staff, security guards, housekeeping and drivers engaged through agencies. The wage ceiling then decides who is an insured person, but the establishment's coverage itself does not depend on how many employees fall below the ceiling. Once covered, an establishment stays covered even if numbers later fall. This is why Kolkata employers who grew from eight to twelve staff during a busy season frequently discover a retrospective liability months later.
The monthly rhythm is straightforward when it is run properly: compute contributions at the current rates on gross wages, generate the challan, remit by the 15th of the following month, and keep the register of employees under Regulation 32 current. Where it goes wrong is at the edges — an insured person whose wage crosses the ceiling mid-contribution-period must still be covered until the end of that period; an accident on the premises must be reported in Form 12 promptly; and omitted wages such as overtime or incentive payments are routinely picked up during inspection and turned into a demand under Section 45A with interest and damages.
Beyond compliance, ESIC has real value for a workforce in Kolkata and Howrah, where ESIC dispensaries and hospitals are well distributed. Employees receive treatment without out-of-pocket cost, sickness benefit during certified illness, maternity benefit for insured women, and dependants' benefit in the event of an employment injury. Employers who register properly, seed correct family details and map employees to the right dispensary get the credit for those benefits; employers who register late usually get a demand notice instead.

Key points to know
Contribution period rules override mid-year wage rises
An employee whose wages exceed the ceiling mid-period stays insured until the contribution period ends. Stopping contributions early creates a shortfall demand.
Gross wages, not basic
ESI contributions are calculated on wages as defined in Section 2(22), which is broader than basic pay and includes most allowances.
Omitted wages are the top inspection finding
Overtime, incentives and payments to casual or contract workers are commonly missed and later assessed under Section 45A.
Accidents must be reported quickly
Employment injuries require reporting in Form 12; delay can prejudice the worker's claim and expose the employer.
Coverage does not lapse with headcount
Once the Act applies, it continues to apply even if employee numbers subsequently fall below the threshold.
